New Beginnings

Not so long ago, my husband and I were residents of the flat and sandy state of Florida. With the cost of living quickly rising and the dreams of having more land on which to raise some chickens and goats rapidly vanishing, we decided it was time to move further north. The kids were out of school and on their own and it was now or never to make some new beginnings.

After a lot of research, we finally decided on North Carolina, and the search for a new home began. Our new favorite website became Realtor.com and there were so many choices that looked just right. Well, just right until we would travel up and look at them. Then we’d find the house was a stone’s throw from the neighbor or that it was on a ledge with no room for so much as a garden.

At last, our luck took a turn for the better. A property I’d fallen in love with but that was out of our price range had gone under contract before our 2nd trip up to look at properties. While we were there, it came back on the market and best of all the price was dropped! We set up a time to look and although most of the land was quite steep, there was still room to have the garden and the few animals I had been dreaming about for years. The house was run down and needed work but it didn’t matter. We were thrilled when our offer was accepted.

We had no idea what we would manage to accomplish but we couldn’t wait! The new beginnings of an adventure as empty nesters on our own “homestead” is starting.
