Sprouts for Spring

My sprouts for Spring planting just popped out of the potting soil and will grow quite a bit more as we wait for the danger of frost to pass. In the mountains of North Carolina, the 3rd week of April is the average period for the last frost. Given the slightly shorter growing season, the local seed stores recommended starting tomatoes and several other vegetables indoors. This gives them longer to mature and produce.

In Florida, the ground was nothing but sand. Here, the soil is mostly clay. Rick has started to till up a few areas for me and I’m looking forward to getting things started. I’m going to add vegetable soil and see how it goes. Next year, I’m hoping to have useable compost to add to the soil. There are so many gardens and farms in the area so I know it can be done!

I also have two pre-existing raised beds that I could just add more soil to and use. They are located on either side of the path to the house. While they seem to get plenty of sun, I don’t like where they are. Currently, there is no time in the plan to relocate as I’ll be transplanting the sprouts for spring in less then two weeks.
