A Hike With Llamas
I love taking hikes with Rick and today we planned on taking a hike with llamas! I had discovered about a month ago that members of Chimney Rock State Park have special events available. One of those events is a hike at the park with llamas. Now, we live close enough to go to the park a few times in the next year to hike, and make a membership worthwhile. I shared my plan for membership, future hikes and the llama hike with Rick. Neither of us had known that llama hikes were a thing or that the idea would sound so fun.
New Members
It didn’t take much discussion for us to approve the hike with llamas plan and buy a year’s membership. Of course, we immediately booked our times for the llama hike too. Making the decision was even easier because we had heard of Chimney Rock from friends. They thought it was amazing to visit even though they didn’t hike and only enjoyed the view. The park had several hiking trails; one which led to a waterfall. We were confident that it would be a great place to take the dog a few times to hike with us too.
Morning of Hike
The weather was lovely today. Cool enough to be comfortable and sunny. I woke up excited and though he didn’t say it, Rick was up and moving promptly as well. We got Mr. B. exercised and fed, left him with toys and snacks before starting the drive. The hike was at the bottom of the mountain, and there was a whole herd of llamas! There were already people there so it seemed taking a hike with llamas was popular.
Before taking a hike with llamas, we got to choose our llama. She was a very sweet, calm girl. When we got to pick a hat, scarf or other accessory for her, she was unbothered by us putting on a flowered bonnet. Everyone was given a few llama treats and our hike began.
The Hike
We took turns leading and our llama just followed along. We learned that they can become certified pack animals as the hike continued. As the trail twisted around, each llama followed behind the next. Occasionally, treats were given out to keep them moving. The hike leader stopped halfway to tell us more llama facts and little stories about the llamas. It seemed like just a few minutes before the hike was over, but it was well over a half hour. Time flies when you are having fun. Rick even tried to suggest adding a llama to the plan. If you get a chance, I highly recommend taking a hike with llamas!
